Abstract

Bolted glulam beam-to-column connections with slotted-in steel plates are commonly used in heavy timber structures. In this paper, 20 full-scale connection specimens, categorized in 6 groups, were tested under shear loading to investigate the mechanical behavior of such connections loaded perpendicular to grain. The results showed that the failure of all the connections was cracking perpendicular to the grain of the wood and the first penetration crack took place near the bolt holes of the upper row. The test results also showed that compared with the loading edge distance e2, the non-loaded edge distance e1 was more influential to the shear performance of the connections. The yield load and elastic stiffness of the joint will change by 16.6% and 60.8%,respectively,with changed non-loaded edge distence e1 varying from 30mm to 70mm.In general, the shear capacity obtained from the tests differed greatly from the predicted values of the existing theoretical formulas. Nevertheless, among the existing formulas, the van der Put’s formula provides predictions that are conservative and closest to the test results, and may thus can be used for design purposes.
